Wilson has long been drawn to old drawings of armour and machines of war and he wanted to find comparisons to investigate the popular conception of modern warfare being almost entirely remote – such as drones – and to speak to those who still use ‘armour’ in modern battle. He came across Suite de Soldats, an exquisite series of etchings by the Franco-English painter, Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740-1812), which are highly stylised military studies celebrating the soldier as hero. Much of Wilson’s work is an investigation into the placement of faith, idealism and idolatry in objects and images. The crossover of context between these stylised etchings and the reality of the bravery of contemporary soldiers is how these five etchings came together.
